Given the need to streamline the system, the State Government has decided to freeze the number of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and utilise the available funds for improving the existing centres.<br /><br />There are nearly 2,300 PHCs, which are far in excess of the norms prescribed by the Union Government. In contrast, a much bigger State, Andhra Pradesh, has 1,300 PHCs and same is the case with Tamil Nadu.<br /><br /><em>Outlay increased<br /></em><br />In the budget for 2011-2012, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has increased the outlay for the health sector from Rs. 1935 crore in 2010-11 to Rs. 2,428 crore in the current year.<br /><br />The State follows the national pattern of a three-tier system of health infrastructure with PHCs, primary health units, and community health centres and sub-centres.<br /><br />According to a top official of the Health Department, freezing the number of PHC's will help provide better healthcare to the public, particularly those living in rural areas. &ldquo;We will better equip the existing centres and also ensure that doctors and nursing staff are in attendance.&rdquo;<br /><br /><em>Being streamlined<br /></em><br />He said &ldquo;the whole system is being streamlined&rdquo;. Yeddyurappa has increased the outlay for the health sector from Rs. 1935 crore in 2010-11 to Rs. 2,428 crore in the current year.<br /><br />The State follows the national pattern of a three-tier system of health infrastructure with PHCs, primary health units, and community health centres and sub-centres.<br /><br />According to a top official of the Health Department, freezing the number of PHC's will help provide better healthcare to the public, particularly those living in rural areas. &ldquo;We will better equip the existing centres and also ensure that doctors and nursing staff are in attendance.&rdquo;<br /><br /><em>Being streamlined<br /></em><br />He said &ldquo;the whole system is being streamlined&rdquo;. Some of the health schemes introduced in recent years such as &lsquo;Thayi Bhagya' wherein pregnant women from below the poverty line families can seek admission in accredited private hospitals for delivery, the &lsquo;Madilu' scheme wherein pregnant women are given neo-natal kits and the &lsquo;Prasuthi Araike' scheme where they are given pre-natal and post-natal nutritional care have all paid good dividends. &ldquo;The focus now is on providing better healthcare for women and children,&rdquo; he said.<br /><br />The &lsquo;Arogyabandhu' scheme of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, which covers a total of 56 PHCs in the State, is being managed by various organisations under public-private partnership.
