                <div align="justify">-The Times of India</div><p align="justify"><br /><em>NEW DELHI: </em>Amid reports of US cyber intelligence units snooping on secret data worldwide, a PIL filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a direction to the Union government to take urgent steps to protect its official data stored on the internet and privacy of millions of Indians holding accounts on social networking sites.</p><p align="justify">Petitioner Prof S N Singh said many government offices and officials use free accounts on Google, Yahoo and Hotmail to send mails and feared that these provided easy access to external agencies to snoop or hack through the database.</p><p align="justify">He said the government must take urgent steps to safeguard sensitive internet communications &quot;which is 'record' as per provisions of Public Records Act but same is being kept (stored) outside India on US servers which is unlawfully intruded by US's intelligence agencies through US-based internet companies under secret surveillance programme called Prism&quot;.</p><p align="justify">He said snooping had severely compromised privacy of millions of Indians who maintained accounts on these internet portals and other social networking sites. &quot;As per reports, US-based nine internet companies operating in India through agreements signed with Indian users shared 6.3 billion information/data with National Security Agency of US without express consent of the user,&quot; he said.</p><p align="justify">Singh requested the court to direct the government &quot;to initiate action against such internet companies for breach of contract and violation of right to privacy by sharing 6.3 billion Indian data with US intelligence agencies&quot;.                 <div align="justify">-The Times of India</div><p align="justify"><br /><em>NEW DELHI: </em>Amid reports of US cyber intelligence units snooping on secret data worldwide, a PIL filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a direction to the Union government to take urgent steps to protect its official data stored on the internet and privacy of millions of Indians holding accounts on social networking sites.</p><p align="justify">Petitioner Prof S N Singh said many government offices and officials use free accounts on Google, Yahoo and Hotmail to send mails and feared that these provided easy access to external agencies to snoop or hack through the database.</p><p align="justify">He said the government must take urgent steps to safeguard sensitive internet communications &quot;which is 'record' as per provisions of Public Records Act but same is being kept (stored) outside India on US servers which is unlawfully intruded by US's intelligence agencies through US-based internet companies under secret surveillance programme called Prism&quot;.</p><p align="justify">He said snooping had severely compromised privacy of millions of Indians who maintained accounts on these internet portals and other social networking sites. &quot;As per reports, US-based nine internet companies operating in India through agreements signed with Indian users shared 6.3 billion information/data with National Security Agency of US without express consent of the user,&quot; he said.</p><p align="justify">Singh requested the court to direct the government &quot;to initiate action against such internet companies for breach of contract and violation of right to privacy by sharing 6.3 billion Indian data with US intelligence agencies&quot;.
