PM Awas Yojana in Uttar Pradesh likely to reach saturation point by 2024 - Vatsala Gaur

Economic Times

The significant increase in budgetary outlay for the PM Awas Yojana is expected to enable Uttar Pradesh to provide houses to all remaining rural beneficiaries of the scheme in the upcoming financial year leading to the PMAY(Rural) quota in the state being filled completely ("saturated") by 2024, when the general elections will be held.

Allocation for PMAY saw a 66% increase to Rs. 79,000 crore in the Union budget tabled on Wednesday.

"In the last six years, UP has received 45.5 lakh houses under the scheme. Recently, the state has received 10 lakh new houses under the scheme and the budget has now provided for the 4 lakh beneficiaries who remained to get houses. In my estimate, UP will now be completely saturated," chief minister Yogi Adityanath said in a press conference to highlight the impact of the budget on the state, according to Economic Times.

Unless no new survey is conducted to identify beneficiaries, a saturation of the scheme in the state by 2024 will be a significant claim for the ruling BJP governments at the Centre and the state. As for the PMAY(U), there is no predetermined list for its rural counterpart.
