“PM will look into ryots' suicides” by J Balaji

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has assured a delegation of TDP-Left parties combine that he would look into the issue of alleged suicide by farmers in Andhra Pradesh who were severely affected in the unprecedented rains and cyclonic storm in the last few months in the State.

The delegation highlighted the plight of farmers who were hit as their produce like paddy, cotton, tobacco, red gram, chillies and oil seeds were damaged/discoloured due to the natural calamities. They also explained the deteriorating health condition of TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu who is on fast unto death demanding better relief for the farmers.

TDP parliamentary party leader Nama Nageswara Rao alleged that Dr. Singh remained “indifferent” to the problems raised by the delegation. The leaders handed over to Dr. Singh a letter from Mr. Naidu describing the condition of the farmers.

CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan, who led the delegation, said Dr. Singh told the delegation that a decision on providing exact quantum of central assistance to A.P. would be taken after going through the report to be submitted by the Central team which had toured the State last week.

CPI (M) MP Brinda Karat said the delegation underlined the need for immediate intervention by the Prime Minister as the situation in the State was very serious with “137 farmers have committing suicide”. This was something which could not brook any bureaucratic delay, she said and criticised the “callous” approach towards the farmers by both the Central and the State governments.

The delegates wanted the Centre to give farmers a minimum of Rs.10,000 per acre for loss of paddy and Rs.15,000 for other crops as compensation. Among others, the delegation was joined by Sivaswamy (AIADMK), Ganesa Murthy (MDMK), Danish Ali (JD-S) and Jayanth Chowdary (RLD).

Earlier, a delegation of Congress MPs from A.P., led by Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and sought her help for providing immediate assistance to the affected farmers. They also wanted waiver of interest on crop loans and rescheduling of such loans.
