Police stop farmers’ march to city

Nearly 1200-1500 farmers from across Punjab, under the banner of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal), on Tuesday began their indefinite protest on the Mohali-Chandigarh border after they were denied entry to Chandigarh. They sat on the road leading from Sector 43-44 in Chandigarh towards Phase VIII in Mohali But a large contingent of police, from both Chandigarh and Mohali, had since early morning closed the road even for regular traffic. The posse of police were well-equipped with batons, teargas shells and water cannons to thwart any forcible bid by farmers to enter Chandigarh. Sensing danger, the farmers, too, did not make any attempt to break the police barricade. The BKU had called the rally to mount pressure on the Punjab government to increase productivity bonus on crops, disburse the Rs 800 crore Central package early to farmers and relieve them from pending electricity bills. The agitators were, however, adamant to continue their dharna till their demands were not met, and the police also seemed in no mood to open the road. On the call of BKU, the farmers started converging on Amb Sahib gurdwara in Phase VIII, Mohali, since morning and at 1.30 pm, after performing the ardas, they marched towards Chandigarh. As they shouted anti-government slogans and proceeded towards Chandigarh, the heavy police force from Mohali, led by SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar followed them. No sooner the protest march crossed YPS Chowk and proceeded towards the Mohali-Chandigarh border, heavy police force from Chandigarh, led by SP Rajinder Singh Ghuman, who were waiting since morning, cordoned off the area and sealed the road to prevent the farmers from crossing the border. As the police force surrounded the farmers, BKU president Balbeer Singh Rajewal appealed the farmers to settle down on the sides of the road and start preparing their meals for the night.
