Sterlite protests have raised some troubling questions: why was ‘illegal’ foreign funding legalised and why was Vedanta given an extension?

In March 2014, the Delhi High Court ruled that both the parties, the Congress and the BJP, were guilty of illegally receiving contributions from British mining and energy conglomerate Vedanta asked the Election Commission to take action against them. The Congress and the BJP separately challenged the ruling.

After the BJP came to power, it amended a law with retrospective effect, nullifying the high court order by making the alleged illegal foreign funds that the two parties received legal. There was no outrage, no mass anti-graft movements, no media frenzy. The NDA government continued to function without even a scratch on its reputation of being a party that stands against all forms of corruption.
