Under the Working Journalists and other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1955, the Union government through the ministry of labour in November notified recommendations to increase the levels of salaries paid to all staffers. The latest Majithia wage board recommended that salaries be increased, in some cases to 200% of prevailing rates, causing an uproar from publishers. Many newspaper companies have challenged the implementation of the wage board in the Supreme Court. The court declined to interfere in the issue immediately and the government notified the same in November. The court said that the wage board recommendations will be subject to the eventual outcome of the case. The next hearing is likely on 31 July. Small regional newspapers and the state-run radio broadcaster Akashvani are likely to be the worst affected in terms of supply of news reports as a result of the PTI employees strike, according to industry experts, who added that larger news organizations will not suffer much since they have subscriptions to multiple newswires and larger staff to rely on for news flow. “An advisory has been sent out to all subscribers,” said Shakeel Ahmad, general manager of PTI’s administration.
