Minister orders survey within two days

Vijayapura (Karnataka): Pointing to his grape farm, which has been virtually devastated in the rains that lashed the district on Monday, Shantaram Shirol says that his only hope to recover loss is if the government offers some compensation.

"Just see this damaged crop. If that remains in the field for two more days, forget people, even the cattle will not consume it," he said.

Mr. Shirol had cultivated grapes on his three-acre land in Adavisangapur village of the taluk by borrowing Rs. 7 lakh from the bank. "If the rain had not fallen for at least a week, I would have harvested the crop and made profit of at least Rs. 6 lakh," he said.

When District in-charge Minister M.B. Patil visited his farm on Tuesday, the farmer made a fervent appeal to the Minister for compensation.

Mr. Patil told presspersons that he has asked the officials of the Revenue, the Horticulture and the Agriculture Departments to complete survey within two days. "I have also strictly instructed them to identify only genuine and deserving farmers who have incurred loss," he said.

Last year, the common complaint against the officials was that they included undeserving names in the list for compensation. The district administration then had to undertake multiple surveys and had to seek more funds.

"This time, I do not want such mistake," the Minister said. He, however, said that the damage this time was lesser compared to last year, and added that as per the preliminary assessment, the total damage was less than Rs. 10 crore.
