Rajasthan doing well on health front: Centre

-The Hindu

A Central team of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has praised the implementation of various health care and nutrition schemes in Rajasthan and expressed hope that the constant decline in infant and maternal mortality rates would help improve the status of health indicators in the State.

The 12-member team, divided into two sub-groups, visited Chittorgarh and Barmer districts and reviewed the progress of initiatives taken under the NRHM, mid-day meal scheme, tuberculosis control programme and supply of food material at Anganwadis for a week.

Led by Union Human Resource Development Ministry Joint Secretary Rita Chatterjee, the team met State Government officers at Swasthya Bhavan here to share its findings and deliberate on strategies for the future. The figures of institutional deliveries were especially highlighted in the context of the newly launched Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojana.

The team members said public health institutions in the two districts were rendering effective services to the patients and the level of awareness among the public at large about medical and health schemes as well as utilisation of the available services was generally satisfactory.

Ms. Chatterjee praised the execution of Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojana in the State and said it was making a significant difference to the figures of institutional deliveries. She termed the newly introduced scheme for free distribution of medicines “extremely valuable” and emphasised the need for supplying all essential drugs under it.

The Central team described the State's performance in the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) programme as a model for others and praised the coordination between the Medical and Health Department and the Women and Child Development Department for its successful implementation. It said the school health check-up programme should be strengthened along similar lines. State Principal Medical and Health Secretary B. N. Sharma said the progress of schemes was reviewed every week through video-conference meetings with the Collectors of various districts.

NRHM State Director Gayatri Rathore said 36 facility-based newborn care (FBNC) units had been mobilised at district hospitals and the medical colleges were providing resources essential for reducing infant mortality rate. For infants of the age of 30 days, the transport, treatment and diagnostic facilities are rendered free of cost.
