A dip in temperature and rains have resulted in pest and fungal infestations at some places across the northern and western India.</p><p align="justify">Reports of yellow rust on wheat fields have been reported across the north Indian states. &quot;We have detected yellow rust in wheat fields of Punjab, Haryana and Jammu,&quot; said Indu Sharma, head of the Directorate of Wheat Research, Karnal.</p><p align="justify">The environmental condition remains conducive for further spread as it has occurred early in the season said the scientist. &quot;We are advising farmers to monitor their crops and identify yellow rust wherein yellow powdery mass appears on the leaves and adheres to the fingers when touched,&quot; she said adding that fungicides should be sprayed immediately.</p><p align="justify">Unseasonal rains since the past few days have also lead to water logging in farms. &quot;If farmers don't go for quick drainage of water from their farms it can lead to drying of crops and reduce production drastically,&quot; said Sharma.</p><p align="justify"> Scientists have been advising farmers not to burn paddy and go for zero tillage when sowing wheat to prevent water logging in fields.</p><p align="justify">In pulses, masur and chana crop could see a delay in harvest with rains and cold weather conditions. &quot;Masur crop in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh has been hit. It can see a fall in production.</p><p align="justify">Chana harvesting will be delayed by a fortnight and we are expecting a bumper production,&quot; said pulses trader Pradeep JIndal, MD, Jindal Overseas Corporation.</p><p align="justify">Frost conditions with the air temperature falling below 4&deg;C has impacted major horticulture crops. Farmers have been advised to provide light irrigation and cover crops such as potato, tomato, peas, cauliflower, garlic and onion with dry paddy or sugarcane straw to protect them from frost.</p><p align="justify">&quot;Thatching from organic matter or plastic filming should be done on young fruit trees,&quot; said Gorakh Singh, principal scientist at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). </p><p align="justify">Potato growers in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have been closely watching the crop, which is vulnerable to late blight owing to ground frost.
