The Punjab government, however, is still struggling to get all private schools on board. Though most of the 9,800 unrecognised schools in Punjab have already registered with the government, there is still over 1,650 schools which are yet to send in their self-declaration forms.&lt;br /&gt;

Director General (School Education) Kahan Singh Pannu said these schools have been asked to get themselves recognised before the end of February, failing which, these will be shut on April 1.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;Yesterday&amp;rsquo;s cabinet decision to grant an extension of five months to such schools did not mean an extension beyond the March 31 deadline laid down in the Act. These five months are to be counted from October 2012, which was the first deadline laid down by the government,&amp;rdquo; he said, adding that the department was confident that most of these schools will comply with their orders.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;In case there are some who decide to not be recognized will have to be shut down. No unrecognised school will be functioning in the state after March 31,&amp;rdquo; said Pannu.&lt;br /&gt;

On Tuesday, the cabinet had decided to amend Rule 11(1), 11(5) and 18(1) of the Punjab Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act-2011, thereby extending the deadline of filing declaration by the schools by five months.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As part of the RTE Act, all private unrecognised schools have to fill self-declaration forms giving details of the infrastructure and other facilities available. These would then be inspected by the education department&amp;rsquo;s team. Recognition will be granted if these schools are found to be complying with the infrastructure and other norms laid down in the Act.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Act also lays down that recognised private schools will reserve 25 per cent of their seats for children of EWS families. &amp;ldquo;Unlike many other states, Punjab will not need private schools to admit poor students. We have a primary school within a kilometre everywhere in the state and there are enough seats available in government schools. Only when our seats are exhausted, will the private schools admit poor students,&amp;rdquo; said Pannu.

The Act that came into force across the country on April 1, 2010, becomes binding on April 1, as three years were given to states to implement the Act.<br /><br />The Punjab government, however, is still struggling to get all private schools on board. Though most of the 9,800 unrecognised schools in Punjab have already registered with the government, there is still over 1,650 schools which are yet to send in their self-declaration forms.<br /><br />Director General (School Education) Kahan Singh Pannu said these schools have been asked to get themselves recognised before the end of February, failing which, these will be shut on April 1.<br /><br />&ldquo;Yesterday&rsquo;s cabinet decision to grant an extension of five months to such schools did not mean an extension beyond the March 31 deadline laid down in the Act. These five months are to be counted from October 2012, which was the first deadline laid down by the government,&rdquo; he said, adding that the department was confident that most of these schools will comply with their orders.<br /><br />&ldquo;In case there are some who decide to not be recognized will have to be shut down. No unrecognised school will be functioning in the state after March 31,&rdquo; said Pannu.<br /><br />On Tuesday, the cabinet had decided to amend Rule 11(1), 11(5) and 18(1) of the Punjab Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act-2011, thereby extending the deadline of filing declaration by the schools by five months.<br /><br />As part of the RTE Act, all private unrecognised schools have to fill self-declaration forms giving details of the infrastructure and other facilities available. These would then be inspected by the education department&rsquo;s team. Recognition will be granted if these schools are found to be complying with the infrastructure and other norms laid down in the Act.<br /><br />The Act also lays down that recognised private schools will reserve 25 per cent of their seats for children of EWS families. &ldquo;Unlike many other states, Punjab will not need private schools to admit poor students. We have a primary school within a kilometre everywhere in the state and there are enough seats available in government schools. Only when our seats are exhausted, will the private schools admit poor students,&rdquo; said Pannu.</div>               </font>

The Act that came into force across the country on April 1, 2010, becomes binding on April 1, as three years were given to states to implement the Act. The Punjab government, however, is still struggling to get all private schools on board. Though most of the 9,800 unrecognised schools in Punjab have already registered with the government, there is still over 1,650 schools which are yet to send in their self-declaration forms. Director General (School Education) Kahan Singh Pannu said these schools have been asked to get themselves recognised before the end of February, failing which, these will be shut on April 1. “Yesterday’s cabinet decision to grant an extension of five months to such schools did not mean an extension beyond the March 31 deadline laid down in the Act. These five months are to be counted from October 2012, which was the first deadline laid down by the government,” he said, adding that the department was confident that most of these schools will comply with their orders. “In case there are some who decide to not be recognized will have to be shut down. No unrecognised school will be functioning in the state after March 31,” said Pannu. On Tuesday, the cabinet had decided to amend Rule 11(1), 11(5) and 18(1) of the Punjab Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act-2011, thereby extending the deadline of filing declaration by the schools by five months. As part of the RTE Act, all private unrecognised schools have to fill self-declaration forms giving details of the infrastructure and other facilities available. These would then be inspected by the education department’s team. Recognition will be granted if these schools are found to be complying with the infrastructure and other norms laid down in the Act. The Act also lays down that recognised private schools will reserve 25 per cent of their seats for children of EWS families. “Unlike many other states, Punjab will not need private schools to admit poor students. We have a primary school within a kilometre everywhere in the state and there are enough seats available in government schools. Only when our seats are exhausted, will the private schools admit poor students,” said Pannu.
