<p style="text-align:justify">Under the National Food Security Act, 2013, (NFSA), all priority category ration cardholders are entitled to 5 kilograms of grain per person and the antyodaya category ration cardholders to 35 kilograms&nbsp;of grain. The NFSA sells the&nbsp;grain at a subsidized price of Rs. 3 per kilogram&nbsp;for rice and Rs. 2 per kilogram&nbsp;for wheat. In April 2020, on account of the unprecedented economic distress, the union government announced the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana under which an extra 5 kg of free foodgrain&nbsp;was provided to every ration cardholder in addition to the NFSA entitlement. Therefore, ration cardholders were entitled to&nbsp;10 kilograms of&nbsp;ration per person.&nbsp;</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">However, following the policy decision to scrap PMGKAY, the ration entitlement&nbsp; will be halved.&nbsp;They will be entitled to only 5 kilograms of ration per person, which is the normal NFSA entitlement,&nbsp;instead of the current 10<br />

To mask the harshness of the announcement, the government&nbsp;announced that for one year starting January 2023 the food grains under NFSA&nbsp;will be provided free of cost by waiving the subsidized price.&nbsp;The government has termed this as a &lsquo;historic&rsquo; decision even though in reality it in no way compensates for the huge reduction in the ration entitlement, the Right to Food campaign said. It added that the net saving per person will be Rs 11 per month only and the cost of purchasing the additional 5 kilograms of grain at market prices will be&nbsp;between Rs. 150-175 as rice and wheat cost around Rs. 30-35 per kg in the market.
