                <p align="justify"><br /><font ><em>CUDDALORE: </em>As labour shortage has been &ldquo;daunting the farm sector,&rdquo; the Joint Action Council of farmers' associations has appealed to the government to review the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREG) Scheme that takes away a major chunk of the workforce.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >The JAC, which met here on Monday , adopted a resolution.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >It said that besides the vagaries of weather, what was hindering the growth of the farm sector was the migration of labour or their non-availability. Villagers were now attracted to the MGNREG Scheme or were lured by jobs in the urban areas, thus, starving the farm sector of the workforce.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Such a situation had affected foodgrains production and productivity, thereby creating a mismatch between food availability and population growth. This, in turn, had triggered inflation and if the rot was not set right in time, food crisis would soon swamp the State, the resolution said.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >A.P. Ravindran of Uzhavar Manra Koottamaippu pointed out that the downtrend in food production could be ascertained from paddy procurement statistics that had declined from 92 million tonnes in 2007-08 to 62 million tonnes in 2008-09 and slid to 16 million tonnes in 2009-10.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Those who participated in meeting included R.
