                <strong>Rights panel to link up with newspapers</strong></h1>

                <div style="text-align: justify">-The Hindu</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">In an effort to reach out to the people who have no voice, the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission proposes to make linkages to the print media for regular feedback on instances of violation of human rights. The Commission has asked the newspapers with multi editions in the State to e-mail it the instances of violations reported in their local editions so that action could be taken on them.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;Most of the complaints we receive are individual in nature. We want to take up broader issues of human rights violations. We are resorting to taking cognisance of issues reported in the media so that the cause of protection of human rights is served,&rdquo; said M. K. Devarajan, Member of the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission and former Additional Director-General, Police, talking to media persons here. Due to multiple editions of major newspapers, information which would be of interest to the Commission at times was missed as it remained confined to local editions, he noted.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;During the past eight months we took up 95 cases suo motu on the basis of reports appearing in the newspapers,&rdquo; said Dr. Devarajan. &ldquo;On an average we get 4,000 complaints a year. Ours is the most inexpensive method of grievance redressal as judiciary and courts involve expenses in litigation,&rdquo; he noted.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;We are also starting a toll-free helpline and also plan to nominate members of the civil society to be the monitors of human rights protection in the districts,&rdquo; Dr. Devarajan said. As such the Commission has office only in the State capital and it has to depend on media for reports of human rights violation, he noted.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;If we have at least five persons in each district who can keep us informed about what is going on, that would be of great value,&rdquo; he stated.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">At present the Commission is without a head as Justice Rajesh Balia, retired Chief Justice of the Patna High Court who was appointed its Chairman, is heading the Inquiry Commission instituted by the Bihar Government into the Kosi river tragedy of August 2008. The Commission has asked the newspapers with multi editions in the State to e-mail it the instances of violations reported in their local editions so that action could be taken on them.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;Most of the complaints we receive are individual in nature. We want to take up broader issues of human rights violations. We are resorting to taking cognisance of issues reported in the media so that the cause of protection of human rights is served,&rdquo; said M. K. Devarajan, Member of the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission and former Additional Director-General, Police, talking to media persons here. In an effort to reach out to the people who have no voice, the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission proposes to make linkages to the print media for regular feedback on instances of violation of human rights. We want to take up broader issues of human rights violations. We are resorting to taking cognisance of issues reported in the media so that the cause of protection of human rights is served,&rdquo; said M. K.
