General Secretary of Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, an apolitical organisation, Kateliya shot into limelight after his arrest in Tappal tehsil of Aligarh while leading a farmers' agitation demanding high compensation for farmers whose land has been acquired for construction of a township. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >Three villagers lost their life in the police firing which attracted attention of national media. Overnight, Kateliya, belonging to dominant Jat community in west UP, emerged as a new farmer leader coming out of the shadow of Tikaits and Ajit Singhs. He began his political journey at a young age of 25 years, worked in different farmer outfits and political parties. He got his first success in 1995 when he was elected unopposed as gram pradhan of his village. He was re-elected in 2000. In between, he contested assembly election from Maat constituency of Mathura, in 1996. He got 22,000 votes and was defeated. Again in 2005, he contested the Zila Panchayat election but lost. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >In his early age, he was with Lok Dal when Chaudhary Charan Singh was alive. He joined BJP during Ram temple movement and is now with the Congress. Politically, he could never rise above village and tehsil, though he has always been in the forefront in his home district and adjoining places leading demonstrations for better facilities for farmers for the past 20 years. Tappal protest on Saturday made him a household name in Western UP. People, till Monday, described him as a honest and polite man who never harms anybody and always works for farmers. Another reason for his popularity was that he had kept the ongoing agitation apolitical so far. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >That was the reason why they went berserk in Tappal in Aligarh and Bajana in Mathura after his arrest on August 14. Nobody was ready to compromise or hold talks with the government till Kateliya was in police custody. General Secretary of Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, an apolitical organisation, Kateliya shot into limelight after his arrest in Tappal tehsil of Aligarh while leading a farmers' agitation demanding high compensation for farmers whose land has been acquired for construction of a township. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >Three villagers lost their life in the police firing which attracted attention of national media. Overnight, Kateliya, belonging to dominant Jat community in west UP, emerged as a new farmer leader coming out of the shadow of Tikaits and Ajit Singhs. He began his political journey at a young age of 25 years, worked in different farmer outfits and political parties. He got his first success in 1995 when he was elected unopposed as gram pradhan of his village. He was re-elected in 2000. In between, he contested assembly election from Maat constituency of Mathura, in 1996. He got 22,000 votes and was defeated. Again in 2005, he contested the Zila Panchayat election but lost. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >In his early age, he was with Lok Dal when Chaudhary Charan Singh was alive. He joined BJP during Ram temple movement and is now with the Congress. Politically, he could never rise above village and tehsil, though he has always been in the forefront in his home district and adjoining places leading demonstrations for better facilities for farmers for the past 20 years. Tappal protest on Saturday made him a household name in Western UP. People, till Monday, described him as a honest and polite man who never harms anybody and always works for farmers. Another reason for his popularity was that he had kept the ongoing agitation apolitical so far. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >That was the reason why they went berserk in Tappal in Aligarh and Bajana in Mathura after his arrest on August 14. Nobody was ready to compromise or hold talks with the government till Kateliya was in police custody. But Tuesday's turn of events -- his release and talks with the cabinet secretary on compromise -- made him a villain, at least in Tappal and adjoining areas. </font></p><p align="justify"><font ></font></p>'
