Rs 200 Cr Relief by Maharastha Govt Staff to Farmers

-Outlook

Mumbai: Maharashtra government staff would contribute their one day's salary towards relief for hailstorm-affected farmers.

The amount would be around Rs 200 crore and would be contributed by the around 15 lakh staff, G D Kulthe, chief advisor of Maharashtra State Gazetted Officer Federation, said.

Unseasonal rains, accompanied by severe hailstorms have left at least 28 people dead and over 100 others injured across Maharashtra in the past 10 days, officials said.

Several homes and dwellings across the state suffered damages as large hailstorms battered many of the state's 35 districts.

Over 9,000 livestock comprising big and small farm animals were also killed as storms swept large parts of the state, barring the coastal areas.

Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar who toured the affected areas, today tweeted, "Reviewed hailstorm situation; Maharashtra, MP, AP, Karnataka, Rajasthan badly affected. Central teams sent to all to identify damage."

"On basis of the report of Central teams and after seeking permission from Central Election Commission, the government would decide on financial package," he said.

"Altogether 28 districts in Maharashtra and MP are badly affected among all states. Detailed report of Central Teams will come by March 19," he said.

"Had a discussion with Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan. Chief Minister of MP Shivraj Singh Chauhan met (me) to discuss the situation," he added.
