RTE affidavit to avoid detention in private schools

-The Times of India

Parents who wish to seek the district education department's help for promotion of their detained ward in the schools will now have to lodge complaint with the department in affidavit.

Following the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2008, coming into effect in the district since 2011, several parents have approached the RTE cell of the education department seeking promotion of their detained wards to higher class in tune with the RTE Act provisions.

With complaints pouring in thick numbers, the department has asked the parents concerned to file the complaint petition in an affidavit.

"The idea is to let parents deal with the school directly and resolve their grievances," said an RTE cell official at the office.

However, senior officials in the RTE cell were not available for comments.

Bhavna Patel, mother of a Class VI student Bhumika Patel of a missionary-run English-medium school, is among the first of the parents who has filed a complaint petition against the school in affidavit with the RTE cell.

"In the affidavit, I had to mention that I am not lodging complaint under anyone's influence," said the mother of the Class VI student who has been detained in the same class for reportedly not performing well in the annual examination held in February.

So far, four parents have submitted their complaints in affidavit and the RTE officials have assured them of looking into the matter.

About 50 students, most of them belonging to classes between UKG and Class VIII, have been detained in their respective classes for not performing up to the mark in most of the 30-odd private English-medium schools.

"In one of the Sakchi-based English-medium schools, 20 students - all belonging to various sections of Class VII - have been detained grossly violating the RTE norms," said Umesh, convener of the Jamshedpur Parents' Association (JPA), the outfit working towards the cause among many in the Steel City.
