-The Times of India   In less than a fortnight since the government notified rules under Right To Education (RTE) Act 2009, hundreds of students started a postcard campaign on Tuesday highlighting various ways in which schools are flouting the norms. Addressed to the Chief Justice of Delhi high court, the postcards brought to light the unfavourable conditions prevalent in government and MCD run schools. The first day of the campaign was conducted at Holambi near Narela. On day one, more than 175 students - from seven government and MCD run schools - poured out their woes. The postcards talked about poor infrastructure, abuse by teachers, absenteeism among teachers and non-conduct of computer classes for years. Rohit, a Class XI student of Rajkiya Co-ed Government School wrote, "The school deletes students names from the rolls without any reason. We are often thrashed by teachers. What's worse is that all the window panes are broken, making it very difficult for us during winter." According to Gajraj of Rajkiya Co-ed Government School, Holambi Colony, Phase - II, "For last four years, no computer classes have been conducted in our school. Moreover, instead of teaching us, our Hindi teacher attends phone calls during class hours." Meanwhile, class V student of an MCD school in the area, Bulbul writes: "Our teacher beats us a lot." The campaign is being organized by Social Jurist Ashok Agarwal to bring forth the ground reality in government and MCD run schools. "These are gross violations of RTE Act. The campaign is an attempt to bring to the notice of the judiciary how schools are violating a fundamental right of the children. We want to give the students a chance to speak out about the conditions in their schools and classroom." While Class IX student Rina and Class VI student Gaffar Khan's letters say how in the absence of cleaning staff students are made to do the work and how due to dirty toilets the students skips school, Class X students Deepak Kumar and Rahul Singh and Class VIII student Preeti Kumari's postcards highlight the lack of basic amenities like benches in their schools. The postcards will be handed over to the Chief Justice for his cognizance and a PIL will be filed based on these narrations.
