                <div style="text-align: justify">-The Telegraph</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify"><em>After doctors, teachers from urban areas will now have to serve in rural areas of Assam.</em></div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Announcing that the process of recruitment of 40, 800 schoolteachers would begin from February 15, education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said candidates from urban areas would have to serve in rural areas, as villages have more vacancies while more urban candidates passed the teacher&rsquo;s eligibility test this year.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Dispur has made teacher eligibility test compulsory for those aspiring to become schoolteachers, in order to implement the right to education in the state.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">A total of 52,722 candidates cleared the teacher&rsquo;s eligibility test conducted across the state on December 10. In order to fully implement the right to education, Assam needs to fill up 95,159 schoolteacher posts.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;The number of candidates clearing the teacher&rsquo;s eligibility test was more from urban areas whereas our rural areas have a maximum number of vacant posts of teachers. So, candidates from urban areas this year will have to serve in the rural areas,&rdquo; Sarma said, addressing a news conference at the state secretariat here.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The minister, however, did not provide details of how many teachers&rsquo; posts were lying vacant in rural areas and the number of candidates who cleared the teacher&rsquo;s eligibility test from urban areas.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Sarma, also the health minister of the state, had made rural posting mandatory for MBBS graduates in 2009.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">However, rural posting of teachers would not be mandatory and candidates from urban areas would automatically have to serve in rural areas since there are more vacancies there.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;We will issue advertisements for recruitment of 28,000 contractual teachers on February 15 and candidates, for the first time, will be able to apply online without any paper work. After scrutiny of the applications, the education department will send the call letters for interviews before March 15 and we are hopeful that appointment will be completed before Bohag Bihu in April. Similarly, recruitment of 12,800 regular posts will be done within May 15,&rdquo; Sarma said.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The announcements comes a day after the Supreme Court vacated a 2010 Gauhati High Court order that banned recruitment of elementary school (lower and upper primary) teachers in the state.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">He said the department has decided to hold the interviews district-wise instead of the earlier system of holding them state and constituency-wise. Rural posting for urban teachers

-The Telegraph After doctors, teachers from urban areas will now have to serve in rural areas of Assam. Announcing that the process of recruitment of 40, 800 schoolteachers would begin from February 15, education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said candidates from urban areas would have to serve in rural areas, as villages have more vacancies while more urban candidates passed the teacher’s eligibility test this year. Dispur has made teacher eligibility test compulsory for those aspiring to become schoolteachers, in order to implement the right to education in the state. A total of 52,722 candidates cleared the teacher’s eligibility test conducted across the state on December 10. In order to fully implement the right to education, Assam needs to fill up 95,159 schoolteacher posts. “The number of candidates clearing the teacher’s eligibility test was more from urban areas whereas our rural areas have a maximum number of vacant posts of teachers. So, candidates from urban areas this year will have to serve in the rural areas,” Sarma said, addressing a news conference at the state secretariat here. The minister, however, did not provide details of how many teachers’ posts were lying vacant in rural areas and the number of candidates who cleared the teacher’s eligibility test from urban areas. Sarma, also the health minister of the state, had made rural posting mandatory for MBBS graduates in 2009. However, rural posting of teachers would not be mandatory and candidates from urban areas would automatically have to serve in rural areas since there are more vacancies there. “We will issue advertisements for recruitment of 28,000 contractual teachers on February 15 and candidates, for the first time, will be able to apply online without any paper work. After scrutiny of the applications, the education department will send the call letters for interviews before March 15 and we are hopeful that appointment will be completed before Bohag Bihu in April. Similarly, recruitment of 12,800 regular posts will be done within May 15,” Sarma said. The announcements comes a day after the Supreme Court vacated a 2010 Gauhati High Court order that banned recruitment of elementary school (lower and upper primary) teachers in the state. He said the department has decided to hold the interviews district-wise instead of the earlier system of holding them state and constituency-wise. A selection committee has been constituted at all the districts headed by additional deputy commissioner (education). “The government has also decided to amend the Assam Elementary School Service Rules to upgrade it for proper implementation of the right to education,” he said. Dhubri district has the highest number of contractual teacher vacant posts — 3,447, followed by Nagaon (3,000), Barpeta (2,000), Cachar (2,000) and Karimganj (1,900), Goalpara and Karbi Anglong (1,700 each), Morigaon (1,500), Sonitpur (1,521), Kamrup (1,108), Darrang (1,100), Kokrajhar (1,100), Lakhimpur (842), Hailakandi (838), Tinsukia (800), Golaghat (770), Dibrugarh (760), Bongaigaon (603), Sivasagar (600), Udalguri (600), Baska (565), Chirang (446), Dima Hasao (366) and Nalbari (300).
