Samajwadi Party opposes anti-rape Bill, says it is 'anti-women' -Ravish Tiwari

-The Indian Express

The Samajwadi Party (SP) Thursday voiced its opposition to the revised Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2013, teh so-called anti-rape bill which seeks to crack down on crimes against women.

“SP will oppose the Bill. It is anti-women and will create anarchy in society in the name of providing safety for women,” said SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav. He said the SP, which provides outside support to the UPA government, will oppose the Bill at the all-party meeting on Monday.

Explaining his party’s opposition, Yadav said some provisions like making stalking an offence are prone to misuse. “This risk of misuse will reduce opportunities for women. Employers will worry about recruiting women. We cannot have separate markets, schools or offices for women, where men will not look at them or walk behind them. In a modern society, there is no scope for segregation, neither is it desirable,” said Yadav.

“In such a case, are we not reducing opportunities for women? Similar excuses may be used in other social places that will restrict participation of women, be it schools or markets, for fear of misuse of these provisions. These provisions are, in fact, anti-women,” said Yadav.

A section of BSP MPs also privately expressed reservations over certain provisions of the Bill, but they said party supremo Mayawati would explain the BSP’s position at an appropriate time.
