Self-confidence jab at govt’s ‘intolerance’

-The Telegraph

Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today blamed Mamata Banerjee’s recent expressions of intolerance towards critics on her “lack of self-confidence”.

He described as “paglamo (madness)” the new government’s curbs on co-operative banks’ loan recovery processes, saying it would “destroy” such banking systems.

Asked during a TV interview about his successor’s frequent admonitions to the Opposition to keep mum and allow the new government to work, Bhattacharjee said: “It’s not just the Opposition that she cannot tolerate.”

He went on: “She cannot tolerate any person who criticises her or her government. She is finding it difficult to tolerate even newspapers or channels that have faulted her administration.’’

The CPM leader then added as an explanation: “Ashole byaparta ektu onyorokom: ei gulo ashchhe atmo-bishwasher abhab theke (the actual reason is a little different: all this arises from lack of self-confidence).’’

The former chief minister touched upon the Mamata government’s directive to co-operative banks in rural areas to seek permission before attaching the property of loan defaulters, which has been interpreted as a virtual blanket waiver of repayment commitments.

Bhattacharjee said his government too had treated debt-ridden farmers sympathetically and restructured their debts but standing in the way of banks was not a “prudent” solution.

“During our government’s tenure, we had shown sympathy for the farmers who had piled up huge debts. We restructured them (the debts); extended repayment periods after droughts or floods; waived some of the loans. That was a necessity,” he said.

“But (the new government’s stand) would destroy the co-operative banking system. Moreover, this will encourage big landowners not to repay their loans.”

Bhattacharjee accepted that 10 months wasn’t enough to judge a government’s performance but said the state administration’s controversy-a-day style was compelling the Opposition to criticise it.

“But what do we do? She is preparing the agenda… setting it for us to criticise the administration’s work. Every day the government is saying something, or doing something, that is forcing us to break our silence and criticise them.’’
