However, West Bengal and Assam - the worst performer - have shown no improvement at all, bucking the national trend of a decline in infant deaths by 4.5% - from 44 deaths for every 1,000 live births in 2011 to 42 fatalities the next year.</p><p align="justify">A combination of causes like low awareness of health and reproductive rights, maternal anemia and the burden of malnutrition carried over generations traditionally contribute to India's high IMR.</p><p align="justify">According to a Unicef report, the global IMR has decreased from an estimated 61 deaths in 1990 to just 37 fatalities in 2011. Annual infant deaths have declined from 8.4 million in 1990 to 5 million in 2011.</p><p align="justify">According to the latest Registrar General of India data, Kerala has kept up its good work at the bottom of the heap with a stagnant IMR of just 12 while Maharashtra is the third-best performer with an IMR of 25, the same as in 2011. Assam has the worst IMR at 55 and West Bengal continues to languish at 32.</p><p align="justify">Baby girls still get a short shrift, with 59 of them (for 1000 births) dying as compared to 54 boys in MP. In Assam, 57 girls died before their first birthday as compared to 54 boys, while in Uttar Pradesh 55 girls perished as compared to 52 boys. Odisha saw 54 girls' deaths as compared to 52 boys, while Rajasthan recorded 51 female infants' death as compared to 47 males.</p><p align="justify">States that have shown the most improvement are Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, recording an identical decline from 57 in 2011 to 53 in 2012. Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu showed a one-point decline, while Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and J&amp;K improved their IMR by two points. States with a three-point dip included Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi and Karnataka. </p>               </font>

According to a Unicef report, the global IMR has decreased from an estimated 61 deaths in 1990 to just 37 fatalities in 2011. Annual infant deaths have declined from 8.4 million in 1990 to 5 million in 2011. According to the latest Registrar General of India data, Kerala has kept up its good work at the bottom of the heap with a stagnant IMR of just 12 while Maharashtra is the third-best performer with an IMR of 25, the same as in 2011. Assam has the worst IMR at 55 and West Bengal continues to languish at 32. Baby girls still get a short shrift, with 59 of them (for 1000 births) dying as compared to 54 boys in MP. In Assam, 57 girls died before their first birthday as compared to 54 boys, while in Uttar Pradesh 55 girls perished as compared to 52 boys. Odisha saw 54 girls' deaths as compared to 52 boys, while Rajasthan recorded 51 female infants' death as compared to 47 males. States that have shown the most improvement are Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, recording an identical decline from 57 in 2011 to 53 in 2012. Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu showed a one-point decline, while Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and J&K improved their IMR by two points. States with a three-point dip included Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi and Karnataka.
