80 per cent subsidy will be granted for farmers: Villupuram Collector

Villupuram (Tamil Nadu): Villupuram farmers are being encouraged to put up solar-powered pumping system to maximise farm production and to economise usage of water, according to V. Sampath, District Collector.

Those farmers who would opt for such a system, being promoted under the National Agricultural Development Programme (NADP), would be eligible to get 80 per cent subsidy, to the extent of Rs. 3,35,200.

The system would cost Rs. 4,39,950 of which the 50 per cent would be borne under the NADP and 30 per cent by the Union Ministry for New and Renewable Energy.

The farmers on their part would have to contribute a sum of Rs. 1,04,750.

Highlighting the salient features of the scheme at a review meeting, the Collector said that the Villupuram district had been given the target of bringing 76 farmers under the scheme this year.

The farmers who have water sources such as open wells or borewells in their farms and who are ready to adopt the micro irrigation system in the form of either drip or sprinkler irrigation could seek the assistance under the scheme from the respective Assistant Directors of Agriculture Department. The Collector also noted that the objectives of the scheme are: to provide energy security to the farmers, to provide for use of green energy, to improve water use efficiency and to improve farm production and productivity.

He said that as of now 1,258 farmers in the district had been raising crops on 1,600 hectares through drip irrigation. The Collector later visited Aariyur in Kaanai block where Raman, a progressive farmer, had set up the solar-powered pump set in his farm.

By increasing farm production and productivity the system would bring down the cost of production, thus, enhancing the profit margins of the farmers. It would also pave the way for achieving food security, besides curtailing dependence on electricity.
