The compost made from municipal waste can be used as organic fertilizer by farmers. At present, the city compost is sold at Rs 5,500 per tonne, with ILFS and Kribhco among key players. The market development assistance is likely to lower the retail price. &lt;br /&gt;

Announcing the decision fertilizer minister Ananth Kumar said city compost is rich in nutrients and the decision is in line with government&#039;s Swachchh Bharat Abhiyaan. City compost will also be standardized with the eco-mark to ensure environment-friendly quality product reaches the farmer, government said in a release.&lt;br /&gt;

As per the decision, fertilizer companies and marketing bodies will be asked to co-market the compost with chemical fertilizers through the dealers&#039; network. To begin with, marketing and promotion of city compost are proposed to be done through the existing fertilizer companies. Subsequently, compost manufacturers and other marketing entities recognized by the state governments would also be included for this purpose.&lt;br /&gt;

The Cabinet also made it mandatory for power discoms to buy 100% power generated from municipal waste.<br /><br />These decisions aim at reducing the pile up of solid waste in cities aggravating the problem of shrinking dumping sites in and around urban areas.<br /><br />India produces around 62 million tonnes of urban waste annually, but most of it is not recycled. At present, annually about 1.5 lakh tonnes of compost from such waste are made while the potential is produce up to 50 lakh tonnes.<br /><br />The compost made from municipal waste can be used as organic fertilizer by farmers. At present, the city compost is sold at Rs 5,500 per tonne, with ILFS and Kribhco among key players. The market development assistance is likely to lower the retail price. <br /><br />Announcing the decision fertilizer minister Ananth Kumar said city compost is rich in nutrients and the decision is in line with government's Swachchh Bharat Abhiyaan. City compost will also be standardized with the eco-mark to ensure environment-friendly quality product reaches the farmer, government said in a release.<br /><br />As per the decision, fertilizer companies and marketing bodies will be asked to co-market the compost with chemical fertilizers through the dealers' network.
