                <p align="justify"><font ><em>JAMUGURIHAT, Sept 6 </em>&ndash; At a time when the cultivators of Assam are spending their days in hopelessness and agony because of the long spell of drought, a new method of cultivation named SRI has brought a ray of hope to them as by this method Ahu rice production can be doubled. This new method of cultivation SRI (System of Rice Intensification) brought from Madagascar, has yielded desired results from experiments in Assam, especially in Sonitpur district, says and demonstrates Pankaj Saikia, agriculture development officer (ADO), Balipara agriculture circle. The unique features of this method are it requires less water, less seeds (700 gm for a bigha of land) less chemical manure, maximum bio fertilizer and short duration of production along with immunability to insects and general diseases of rice.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >In plantation also it requires only one seedling of 8-12 days maturity and 40-50 offshoots are coming out from the one seedling planted in a short duration of time. As it is Ahu rice method of cultivation requiring only 120 days not much a water is required and the plot of land can be easily utilised for any kind of rabi crop. This year the Balipara agriculture circle of Sonitpur district under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) and Rastriya Krishi Vikash Yojana (RKVY) has taken up 3 bighas of land in Kekokoli Nepali gaon in Khanamukh, one Nawab Ali has cultivated 1R-6R variety of rice in his plot of land and when he harvested the same, he got 24 mounds of rice per bigha of land.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >The experimental cultivation was done under the supervision of Durga Prasad Nath the field agriculture extension worker and on the day of harvesting the 24 mounds of paddy were shown to a group of journalists. The rice collecting function was attended by a large number of cultivators of the locality including three ADOs, Bharat Rajbongshi, Pranab Bora and Satish Ch Kalita along with Pankaj Saikia ADO of Balipara agriculture circle. Saikia urged the cultivators to switch over to this new SRI method of cultivation so that they can produce rice in adverse circumstances and offered to help the cultivators in all possible way. Such a new method cultivation will definitely help the farmers of Assam, it is hoped.<br /></font></p>               </font>

The unique features of this method are it requires less water, less seeds (700 gm for a bigha of land) less chemical manure, maximum bio fertilizer and short duration of production along with immunability to insects and general diseases of rice.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >In plantation also it requires only one seedling of 8-12 days maturity and 40-50 offshoots are coming out from the one seedling planted in a short duration of time. This year the Balipara agriculture circle of Sonitpur district under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) and Rastriya Krishi Vikash Yojana (RKVY) has taken up 3 bighas of land in Kekokoli Nepali gaon in Khanamukh, one Nawab Ali has cultivated 1R-6R variety of rice in his plot of land and when he harvested the same, he got 24 mounds of rice per bigha of land.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >The experimental cultivation was done under the supervision of Durga Prasad Nath the field agriculture extension worker and on the day of harvesting the 24 mounds of paddy were shown to a group of journalists. The rice collecting function was attended by a large number of cultivators of the locality including three ADOs, Bharat Rajbongshi, Pranab Bora and Satish Ch Kalita along with Pankaj Saikia ADO of Balipara agriculture circle.
