                <div align="justify">-The Times of India</div><p align="justify"><em>Bhagalpur: </em>The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and System of Root Intensification method for wheat, also referred to as System of Wheat Intensification (SWI) are likely to augment agriculture production manifold besides catering to the ever increasing demand for rice and wheat.</p><p align="justify">&quot;Through SRI, we can harmonize with the world view that 'rice and wheat are life support food for millions',&quot; said the agriculture scientists and experts adding the results of SRI methods since 2010 have exhibited manifold growth in the paddy and wheat production in Bhagalpur division.</p><p align="justify">If the statistics from agriculture department and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) are to be believed, the SRI method has increased production by 200%. Under the Farmers' Technology Transfer Fund (FTTF) endorsed by NABARD for propagation of SRI technique, paddy yield increased from 28-32 quintal per hectare to 64-120 quintal in Bhagalpur division.</p><p align="justify">The farmers used various approved hybrid varieties provided by the support agencies besides adopting the SRI practices that resulted in huge paddy production during past seasons, agriculture department and NABARD sources said. The results of rice production were so encouraging that the then district magistrate Narmadeshwar Lal and other senior officials initiated harvesting on the SRI plot of farmer Basant Mandal at village Fatehpur under Jagdishpur block in Bhagalpur district in 2011.</p><p align="justify">The SRI technique was first developed in the 1980s as a synthesis of locally advantageous rice production practices in Madagascar by Jesuit Priest Fr Henri de Laulanie. However, it was Dr Norman Uphoff from Cornell International Institute for Food and Agriculture, Ithaca (USA), who popularized the SRI method the world over in the late 1990s.</p><p align="justify">Although the SRI practice for wheat cultivation is bit different from rice cultivation, the principles are common as in rice cultivation, said agriculture department sources.</p><p align="justify">It is different way of cultivating the crop though the fundamental practices remain more or less the same like in the conventional method, said assistant joint director, agriculture, Ram Kishore Prasad, adding SRI is a system of production with four main components - soil fertility management, planting method, weed control and water/irrigation management.</p><p align="justify">SRI for rice and SWI for wheat cultivation are likely to bring a sea change in agriculture production as well economic status of the farmers, said JD (U) MLA from Sultanganj Subodh Rai. However, it was Dr Norman Uphoff from Cornell International Institute for Food and Agriculture, Ithaca (USA), who popularized the SRI method the world over in the late 1990s.</p><p align="justify">Although the SRI practice for wheat cultivation is bit different from rice cultivation, the principles are common as in rice cultivation, said agriculture department sources.</p><p align="justify">It is different way of cultivating the crop though the fundamental practices remain more or less the same like in the conventional method, said assistant joint director, agriculture, Ram Kishore Prasad, adding SRI is a system of production with four main components - soil fertility management, planting method, weed control and water/irrigation management.</p><p align="justify">SRI for rice and SWI for wheat cultivation are likely to bring a sea change in agriculture production as well economic status of the farmers, said JD (U) MLA from Sultanganj Subodh Rai.
