&amp;quot;In the last few months the price of pulses and vegetables has gone up drastically. Various corporate houses have agreed to support the project of installing safe and fire proof kitchens.&lt;br /&gt;

Though the Centre has been giving subsidy on LPG cylinders in mid-day meals, a large number of schools are using firewood to cook noon meal. LPG connection will be provided in 14,337 schools. Besides, smokeless challahs will be provided by Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) to make the process smokeless and hassle free.&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;quot;There is no paucity of funds as various agencies are ready to support the noon-meal scheme,&amp;quot; he said.&lt;br /&gt;

The state government has asked the state food safety commissioner to conduct laboratory test of food samples at least once a month.<br /><br />&quot;Random samples will be collected from different schools at least once a month and will be sent to laboratories for testing,&quot; said state nodal officer for mid-day meal Gangadhar Sahoo.<br /><br />In the wake of increasing prices of various food items, which has been affecting the mid-day meal scheme the state government has formed a cost-examining committee to review the prices vis-a-vis market prices. At present, the state is spending Rs 4.20 per meal for primary school students and Rs 6.29 per meal for elementary school students.<br /><br />&quot;In the last few months the price of pulses and vegetables has gone up drastically. This has affected the mid-day meal as teachers sometimes compromise with the nutritional value of food served to children. State to take over midday meal scheme, boost quality -Minati Singha

-The Times of India BHUBANESWAR: The state government has decided to overhaul the midday meal scheme in over 65,000 schools in the state by this year end to ensure quality food for the mid-day meal. The state government has asked the state food safety commissioner to conduct laboratory test of food samples at least once a month. "Random samples will be collected from different schools at least once a month and will be sent to laboratories for testing," said state nodal officer for mid-day meal Gangadhar Sahoo. In the wake of increasing prices of various food items, which has been affecting the mid-day meal scheme the state government has formed a cost-examining committee to review the prices vis-a-vis market prices. At present, the state is spending Rs 4.20 per meal for primary school students and Rs 6.29 per meal for elementary school students. "In the last few months the price of pulses and vegetables has gone up drastically. This has affected the mid-day meal as teachers sometimes compromise with the nutritional value of food served to children. The committee will recommend the revision of prices," Sahoo said, adding the Centre has increased 5% of its share than last year for price rise, while the prices of essential commodities go up several times a year. Sources said of the total 65,000 schools, over 10,000 kitchen sheds could not be completed for paucity of funds, while in more than 500 schools kitchen shed could not be constructed because of various reasons. The state government has decided to set up prefabricated kitchen shed in around 15,000 schools. Various corporate houses have agreed to support the project of installing safe and fire proof kitchens. Though the Centre has been giving subsidy on LPG cylinders in mid-day meals, a large number of schools are using firewood to cook noon meal. LPG connection will be provided in 14,337 schools. Besides, smokeless challahs will be provided by Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) to make the process smokeless and hassle free. "There is no paucity of funds as various agencies are ready to support the noon-meal scheme," he said. To free teachers from mid-day meal work, the government is also planning to expand the central kitchen scheme in more districts and to involve more women self-help groups.
