Raipur: Chhattisgarh the rice bowl of India has managed to maintain stable paddy production this year despite drought conditions prevailing in several districts of the State. The Indira Gandhi Agricultural University (IGAU) Scientists claim that except rainfall dependent fields which were devoid of showers, other regions in the State have continued to maintain the ‘good old agricultural standards’. “It is appreciable to notice that paddy farming had been carried out in both low and high land areas. Out of the total 35 lakh hectares area marked for agriculture in Chhattisgarh, the response of paddy and vegetable farming is least affected by drought in around 25 lakh hectare area,” said Thakur Chhedilal Barrister College of Agriculture and Research Station, Bilaspur Professor SR Patel on Wednesday. However, last year, the State was able to show 100 per cent agricultural output in the 35 lakh hectare area since it was not affected by drought, pointed out Patel. On the other hand, Professor ML Sharma of the same Department pointed on the benefits of deep irrigation and tube well facilities around the fields near rivers which led to the better paddy production. Unfortunately, the existing drought scenario has caused trouble to the farmers of Mahasamund, Saraipali and those owning fields in the Dhamtari regions. “The State has incurred agricultural loss in about 10 lakh hectare area this year though it has not much affected the crops of winter season,” said Patel. The Agriculture Department has started encouraging the farmers to sow more of pulses crop in Rabi season 2015-16.
