Street plays highlight sorry condition of govt schools |
-The Times of India It's been long that students in Delhi government schools have been at the receiving end of government apathy. Without the basic amenities at their disposal, and being on the blind spot of the lawmakers, theirs is a tale of woe, angst and robbed aspirations. Now, a group of volunteers and government school students have decided to speak up and highlight their plight to the world. Their medium of choice: streetplays. A student falls ill after eating a mid-day meal at a government school. He is then beaten up by the cook for complaining. The students rise up to complain but there is no one to take their complaint. Such was the plot of a play by students of Aditi Mahavidyalaya College for Women. This volunteer group performed the play based on their visits to government and MCD run schools. "None of the issues dealt with in the play are fictional," said the performers. The street plays were part of a national theatre festival - Bol Jamoore - organized by Child Rights and You (CRY) at Dilli Haat on Saturday. The plays, performed by over 50 students, attracted audience of varying age-groups and ended on a roar of applause. The plight of the girl students at Rajkiya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Kalyanpuri is even more horrifying. "Since our desks are broken, most of the students sit on a sheet on the floor," said Babli, a performer and a student from the school. Her classmate, Poonam, added, "There is only one toilet for all the students in school. As junior students also use the toilet, it is often dirty. If we ask for permission to go home and use the toilet, we are not allowed. There are even times when we do not use the toilet for an entire day." Their worries don't end here. Books are distributed for free till class 8 and after that they are given Rs 150 to buy books. "Our books are worth around Rs 350. So the remaining cost has to be borne by my father. He is a construction worker and finds it really hard to afford the expense," says Babli. Most of them aspire to make it big and accept that a little positive push from authorities can make things easier for them. "I must study till class 12 atleast as I want to become an air hostess," said Poonam, whose father is a driver and her mother is a home maker. In another play by students of Bal Vikas Dhara, a father is seen reluctant to get his son admitted to a school as he thinks that he will be asked to pay a hefty fee. After a lot of effort from his wife, he is convinced and goes to admit his child. However a corrupt government school teacher asks him to pay up, contrary to the norm that government schools do not charge any fee. |
