What more, the combined toxic residue of endosulfan in soil samples collected from affected areas is persistent only for 1.5 to 2 years, before naturally degrading.</p><p align="justify">The study, which comes as a relief to many, was jointly conducted by the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) and the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). It assessed endosulfan contamination at cashew plantations.</p><p align="justify">This was the first time that a government-recognized agency conducted the study, carried out in four phases from April 2010 to April 2013.</p><p align="justify">It found endosulfan in soil samples taken from Panathadi and Muliyar panchayats. The endosulfan level at Muliyar had decreased from 5.21 microgram/kilogram to 3.91 microgram/kg and in Panathadi panchayat from 4.88 to 4.12 microgram/kg.</p><p align="justify">The study by a four-member team covered 11 panchayats: Enmakaje, Kumbadaje, Pullar Periya, Muliyar, Kayyur Cheemeni, Ajanoor, Badiyadukka, Kallar, Panathadi, Karadukka and Bellur.</p><p align="justify">They collected sediment samples from ponds, open wells, streams, plantation tanks and valleys. Soil samples were collected from dry ponds, plantations and helipad sites in Cheemeni, Pullur Periya, Muliyar, Badiyadukka , Kallar and Bellur.</p><p align="justify">The study's third phase found endosulfan residue in water samples below detection level. Maximum concentration of residue in water was detected-during the second phase in 2012-from Puller Periya panchayat (1.11 microgram/litre) and at Enmakaje, where the water was collected from near a plantation area (1.01 microgram/ litre).</p><p align="justify">Of the 14 sediment samples, endosulfan was detected in seven during the second phase. The third phase revealed the residue was below detection limit in sediment samples.</p><p align="justify">The team analyzed 13 soil samples; residue was found in five collected from Pullur Periya, Panathadi and Muliyar in the third phase. The fourth phase was found it only in Panathadi and Muliyar.</p><p align="justify">P S Harikumar, head of the water quality division at CWRDM, said the natural degradation of endosulfan was on. &quot;The level of endosulfan in soil and sediment is higher than in water samples due to the greater absorption of the insecticide by soil and sediment.
