The study also found that textbooks provided by the state government have grammatical errors with many words spelt incorrectly.

A study conducted in 28 primary and upper primary schools in various districts of Bihar has revealed that only 19 per cent primary schools had toilets, 28 per cent had hand pumps and 83 per cent teachers were hired on contractual basis. The study also found that textbooks provided by the state government have grammatical errors with many words spelt incorrectly.

“In primary schools, 83 per cent teachers were found to be contractual employees, whereas the figures for upper primary schools was 61 per cent. Similarly, in primary schools, only 19 per cent had toilets as against 36 per cent in primary with upper primary schools,” read the report prepared by Department of Sociology, South Asian University(SAU), and Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, Germany, which undertook the study.

The aim of the study was to see how far the Bihar government’s social justice agenda has penetrated the education sector in the state, and whether education has in turn made students aware of the importance of social justice.
