                <p align="justify"><br /><font >Food security in the villages of Jharkhand &mdash; particularly Chandwa block in Latehar &mdash; is extremely low, prompting thousands to migrate to nearby towns in search of livelihood, a study conducted by two students of SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (Mumbai) has found out. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >The study further showed that the villages are teeming with youngsters &mdash; average age is 24 years &mdash; while the population of 60 years and above is just about four per cent. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >&ldquo;Only about 20 per cent of these families in Chandwa block have foodgrain that will last till the next harvest season, that is November-December. Members of the rest of the households have to go out and labour everyday to feed themselves,&rdquo; said Freejo Jose, a management student of Kerala pursuing studies at SP Jain Institute of Management and Research. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >Jose is here along with batchmate Abhishek Nalin, a Ranchi boy, to work with NGO Citizen Foundation as a part of their course curriculum. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >The students, who have been camping here for the past one and a half months, conducted a socio-economic study of nine hamlets of Chandwa block &mdash; a Naxalite stronghold and one of the most backward blocks of the state. The villages on which the youths focused are Hargarwa, Patratoli, Dhobitoli, Domtoli, Devi Mandap, Tilaiyatoli, Kusumtoli, Jagraha and Kuritarn. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >&ldquo;In 60 per cent of households out of the 1,034 families picked up for the study, at least one member has migrated to the city or town in search of livelihood. Irrigation facilities are very poor here, thus leaving the villagers with little self- employment opportunity on their land,&rdquo; Jose added. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >They pointed out that if the state government ensured adequate irrigation facility to the farmers, they would not need to migrate. They also said that the villagers did not have proper farming equipment. &ldquo;Only two households had tractors,&rdquo; noted Jose. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >The students also studied the prospect and problems of Bal Bhavan, and suggested ways to Citizens Foundation for running the same in the absence of proper funding by the government. &ldquo;We have suggested Citizens Foundation to find partners from among private organisations for organising programmes for children in joint-venture formats.
