A helicopter flew over our village. We thought it would rescue us, but it didn&rsquo;t,&rdquo; said Nirakar Mallick of Palimi village, one of the worst-hit areas.<br /><br />At Aliha village, people are scared that they might have to go without food. &ldquo;We have been surviving on flattened rice since yesterday. The stock will get exhausted soon. No relief has still been provided to us,&rdquo; said Saswat Biswal, a college student from the village.<br /><br />The situation is similar in Jajpur district. &ldquo;The fury of the floods caught us unawares. Government rescue and relief teams are yet to reach us,&rdquo; said Manorama Samal of Charimania village in Bari block of Jajpur. The current spell of floods has affected more than 21 lakh people in 67 blocks of 10 districts. $disp = '<p>-The Telegraph</p><p>&nbsp;</p><div align="justify">An atmospheric depression that created a zone of rain across parts of Orissa caused water levels to rise in several rivers, meteorologists said today.<br /><br />The depression had delivered rain over Balasore, Keonjhar, Angul districts late last week, causing the upper Brahmani and lower Brahmani to swell, but scientists today said they expect no rainfall over the next two days.<br /><br />&ldquo;At 9 this morning, the Brahmani (river) at Jenapur had risen to 23.88-metres, just a little above the danger mark of 23-metres,&rdquo; said Lala Debendra Prasad Roy, director of the flood-meteorological division in Bhubaneswar.<br /><br />&ldquo;But without more rain, we expect the water levels to recede,&rdquo; Roy said.<br /><br />&ldquo;We do not expect any more significant rain in Orissa over the next two or three days,&rdquo; said Sharat Chandra Sahu, director of the meteorlogical centre in Bhubaneswar.<br /><br />Residents of 167 villages in Kendrapara district are bearing the brunt of floods caused by inundation in the Brahmani river. &ldquo;For the past 24 hours we have been stranded on the roof of our house. A helicopter flew over our village. We thought it would rescue us, but it didn&rsquo;t,&rdquo; said Nirakar Mallick of Palimi village, one of the worst-hit areas.<br /><br />At Aliha village, people are scared that they might have to go without food. &ldquo;We have been surviving on flattened rice since yesterday. The stock will get exhausted soon. No relief has still been provided to us,&rdquo; said Saswat Biswal, a college student from the village.<br /><br />The situation is similar in Jajpur district. &ldquo;The fury of the floods caught us unawares. Government rescue and relief teams are yet to reach us,&rdquo; said Manorama Samal of Charimania village in Bari block of Jajpur. The current spell of floods has affected more than 21 lakh people in 67 blocks of 10 districts. The death toll has touched 20.<br /><br />Seven air force helicopters and one navy chopper dropped relief packets in some of the marooned villages today.<br /><br />Apart from Kendrapara and Jajpur, Angul, Balasore, Bhadrak, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sundergarh have been hit by the floods.<br /><br />Naveen visited the flood-affected areas of Banki in Cuttack district today and distributed relief material. He also spoke to the local officials. The area was affected by the floods in the Mahanadi about a week ago with people still reeling from its impact.<br /><br />Government officials admitted that the situation had aggravated in certain areas. &ldquo;The situation has aggravated in some parts of Aul block in Kendrapara district. Over 50,000 people are marooned there despite our best efforts,&rdquo; said Hemant Sharma, an IAS officer deputed to monitor the flood situation in Kendrapara.<br /><br />Kendrapara collector Pradipta Kishore Patnaik said the administration was keeping a close watch on the situation. &ldquo;An operation to evacuate people in the marooned villages is under way,&rdquo; he said.<br /><br />The situation in Bari block continues to be equally grave with the water level in Brahmani, Kharasrota rivers and their tributaries still rising. According to official reports, over 1.5 lakh people in 98 villages in the block are marooned and have remained inaccessible to relief and rescue teams.<br /><br />This is said to be the worst floods in Bari since 1955. &ldquo;I have never seen anything like this,&rdquo; said 70-year-old Arjun Rout of Bandhapada village under Ratalanga gram panchayat in Bari block.</div>'
