Seventy per cent of land holdings in Punjab are less than four acres in size. A majority of Punjab&rsquo;s farmers come under the marginal category. Under such circumstances, what the deputy CM is saying is unconscionable and laughable.&rdquo;</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Khangura also pointed out that intensive agriculture of Punjab had little in common with the sort of agriculture done in Latin America. Other Congress leaders, too, criticised Sukhbir for his suggestion. &ldquo;The deputy CM should rather focus on providing succor to the poor farmers of the state. Sukhbir trying to divert farmers’ attention: Cong

The Congress is critical of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal’s call to state farmers to expand, diversify and take on the opportunities available in the countries of Africa, former Commonwealth of Independent States and now Latin America. The Congress has termed Sukhbir’s suggestion a “red herring introduced to divert attention from more pressing concerns back in Punjab”. Qila Raipur MLA Jassi Khangura said: “At a time when farmers are struggling for sustenance, it is unimaginable for them to go out of India and invest in a foreign land. Seventy per cent of land holdings in Punjab are less than four acres in size. A majority of Punjab’s farmers come under the marginal category. Under such circumstances, what the deputy CM is saying is unconscionable and laughable.” Khangura also pointed out that intensive agriculture of Punjab had little in common with the sort of agriculture done in Latin America. Other Congress leaders, too, criticised Sukhbir for his suggestion. “The deputy CM should rather focus on providing succor to the poor farmers of the state. We need to provide viable alternatives for crop diversification,” said Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira. Khaira also termed Sukhbir’s statement regarding the Government of India’s direction to pass the relief amount of Rs 800 crore to the Punjab State Electricity Corporation Limited as a “blatant lie”. “I have a copy of the letter sent by Minister of State for Finance N N Meena, which clearly states that putting conditions on utilisation of compensation amount would not be appropriate. Hence, there was no condition laid by the Government of India to give this Rs 800 crore to PSECL.”
