                <font ><br /></font><div align="justify"><font >In a bid to stall the contentious Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill, the Trinamool Congress has demanded a detailed discussion in the Lok Sabha before the legislation and the accompanying Resettlement and Rehabilitation Bill are taken up for consideration in the winter session.</font><br /><br /><font >The Trinamool Congress, which has expressed major reservations on the Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill, put forward this demand at a meeting of Lok Sabha Business Advisory Committee (BAC) on Tuesday. &ldquo;We want a discussion on land acquisition. There are many issues that have to be raised so we want a discussion in the Lok Sabha,&rdquo; Trinamool Congress chief whip Sudip Bandyopadhyay told ET.</font><br /><br /><font >When asked whether Trinamool had agreed to the passage of the contentious bill, Mr Bandyopadhyay said: &ldquo;There is no question of consent because we are talking about a discussion on the issue before the bill is considered. Our stand on the issue has been expressed explicitly by our leader Mamata Banerjee .&rdquo;</font><br /><br /><font >Ms Banerjee, whose party is eyeing major electoral gains in the forthcoming West Bengal assembly elections, has consistently maintained that the state should not have any role in land acquisition for private players. The Trinamool Congress says that no multi-crop land should be acquired and if acquisition is a certainty, there should be no &ldquo;forcible acquisition&rdquo;, but only &ldquo;amicable acquisition&rdquo; after an agreement between the buyer and the seller. The Trinamool chief has also given her formula for compensation, saying that one of the members of the affected family should be given a government job and in case no person is found eligible for a government job, s/he should be given a pension for 30 years.</font><br /><br /><font >According to sources, the government is fearing that with assembly elections around the corner, Trinamool Congress might dig in its heels and insist on another look at the bill by the standing committee.</font><br /><br /><font >The Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill makes out a case for three categories of projects for which the government can acquire 100% land. These include establishment of installations pertaining to national security, infrastructure and facilities designated as &ldquo;social infrastructure&rdquo;, such as health, education and space research.</font><br /><br /><font >For any project, land could be acquired in the 70:30 ratio, with the company planning to set up the facility on that land being asked to purchase 70% of it. The state government would step into the picture only after the private player had done its bit. The state would take over the remaining 30% if it felt the project fell in the &ldquo;public purpose&rdquo; domain. The Trinamool Congress, however, is opposed to this clause as it does not want any role for the state government. </font><br /><br /></div>               </font>
