TN govt to take over sand quarries

-PTI

Madurai: All sand quarries in Tamil Nadu would be closed down in three years and the government would undertake mining, storing and selling of sand at cheaper rates, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapaddi K. Palaniswami has said.

“Sand quarrying will be completely stopped in the next three years. The Government will completely undertake sand quarrying, storing and selling of sand and make it available at cheaper rates,” he said yestreday.

Palaniswami said the government would urge builders to use an alternative to sand.

Illegal sand mining has not only led to a fall in the water level in river beds and basins, but also affected the flow of rivers across the state.

The failure of both the South-West Monsoon and the North-East monsoon and over-exploitation of available groundwater resources for both residential and commercial purposes have only exacerbated the problem.
