TN seeds nutritional self-sufficiency programme in villages

Will provide garden kits to every home to grow their own nutritional food

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has devised an innovative nutritional self-sufficiency garden programme, among other schemes, as part of its long-term goal to achieve food and nutritional security in the State.

It is attempting to get every household in the 12,500-odd villages in the State to grow its requirement of nutritional food in its own backyard. It will be providing a free garden kit to every village home.

Production shortfall

Tamil Nadu has been producing a large quantity of rice (about 70 lakh tonnes a year) and maize (about 26 lakh tonnes), both of which are rich sources of carbohydrates. But, the State’s production of pulses, oilseeds, millets, vegetables and fruits is lower than the demand.

All these food items are rich sources of proteins, vitamins and minerals.

“Tamil Nadu has already achieved self-sufficiency in food production. But we need to achieve nutritional security by boosting the productivity of various other crops. We have devised several schemes such as self-sufficiency farming, crop diversification, organic farming, intercropping, bund cropping, fallow land cultivation,” C Samayamoorthy, Agricultural Production Commissioner, and Secretary-Agriculture, Government of Tamil Nadu, told BusinessLine.

To make households self sufficient, the State Agriculture Department will provide coconut saplings, a pack of horticultural seedlings such as lemon, papaya, drumstick, and a few vegetable seedlings, free of cost, to every household in the villages.

“The idea is to make people grow some of the essential items they consume in their backyards so that they not only achieve self-sufficiency, but also consume foods with high nutritional values,” he said.
