                <div style="text-align: justify">-The Hindu Business Line</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The Tamil Nadu Government has urged the Centre to expedite financial assistance for its Rs 700 crore scheme to computerise the PDS with a view to increase efficiencies of operation.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">It also pleaded with the Centre to exempt the State from the purview of the proposed Food Security law and reconsider its decision to implement the Targetted Public Distribution System.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">According to a copy of the speech by the Tamil Nadu Food Minister, Mr R. Kamaraj, delivered at a meeting in New Delhi to discuss the Food Security Bill and modernisation of the proposed Targetted Public Distribution System, the Minister has urged the Centre to reconsider implementation of the TPDS and exempt the State from the proposed food security law.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The proposed Food Security law and the TPDS would adversely impact the welfare measures and universal coverage provided under the PDS by the Tamil Nadu Government.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The TPDS will benefit only 75 per cent of the rural population and 50 per cent of the urban population. It also proposes to distinguish the beneficiaries between priority segment covering 46 per cent of the rural families and 28 per cent urban families; and general category covering 29 per cent rural families and 22 per cent in the urban centres.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The State Government's universal coverage provides food security to the entire population.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The TPDS is also not clear on the benefits and identification of beneficiaries such as pregnant or nursing mothers, providing nutritious meals to the children and the malnourished.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The State Government spends Rs 1,300 crore annually in providing nutrition to these categories and an additional Rs 2,800 crore in providing a monthly pension to the 24 lakh elderly, destitute, widows, farm labourers and the differently-abled.
