Trail of death in chit fund collapse -Falguni Banerjee & Sanjib Chakraborty |
-The Times of India
This is the eighth suicide since the Saradha Group meltdown ruined lakhs of families and triggered the state-wide collapse of Ponzi firms. With neighbours turning on neighbours, Monday's murder is a grim portent of darker days to come. Jayanta Sarkar, 48, a director of Hello India micro-finance company, was strangled early on Monday. His wife Papiya, a schoolteacher, found him seated on a sofa with his legs tied. The strangulation marks on his throat are so deep that police suspect an iron wire was used. Papiya told police that three persons - Abhijit Saha and Abdulla Rashid from Cooch Behar and Biplab Biswas from Haringhata, Nadia - visited their house at 2am on Monday. At least one of them, Biplab, worked in Jayanta's company, she said. She served them tea and went upstairs. After a while, the trio told her that they were leaving as Jayanta had fallen asleep. "I also went to sleep. I was shocked to see him dead this morning with wounds around his neck," Papiya said. She admitted that her husband was under pressure from depositors after the Saradha collapse. "My husband had paid off most investors. The firm has a garments factory in Dogachia (North 24-Parganas) and an office in Kolkata's Manicktala. He had planned to sell them to pay off the few investors whose debts he was yet to be cleared," Papiya said. Hooghly SP Tanmay Raychaudhury said they have registered a murder case.
