In child population, however, rural areas clocked 13.08%, while the urban areas showed a figure of 9.32%, Acharjee pointed out.

The sex ratio of the state showed encouraging results in the census, with 961 (number of females per 1000 males) in 2011 census, as compared to 948 in 2001. The growth seems more positive when compared to the national average sex ratio of 945.

The census also revealed encouraging statistics for state literacy. Successful implementation of literacy programmes like Sarva Shiksha has helped the state achieve an overall literacy rate of 87.75%, as compared to the overall literacy rate of 73.19% in 2001. -The Times of India
Migration of rural Tripura population to urban and semi-urban areas has shown a sharp rise during the last 10 years, the growth of urban population in the state recording an increase of over 9.12% than the preceding decade.
According to 2011 census report, the total population in the state stands at 36,71,032 currently, with the growth of urban population registered at 26.18% in 2011, as compared to 17.06% in 2001. "Rural population went down to 73.82% in 2011, which was earlier 82.94%," said Tripura census department director Dilip Kumar Acharjee. "The growth of urban population has been highest in South Tripura district," he added. In 2011 figures, literacy among rural population was registered at 85.58%, while urban pockets showed a literacy rate of 93.61%. "The percentages of literacy in both rural and urban population in the state have risen in comparison to the last decade. The highest literacy rate in rural areas is reported in North Tripura district, while the highest rate in urban areas is reported from Dhalai district," Acharjee said. A caste census along with a socio-economic survey is on the cards next to determine the number of people living below the poverty line. |
