Two CPI-M activists killed in West Bengal by Tamal Sengupta

West Bengal is slowly turning into a politically volatile state again. Two CPIM activists including a former MLA, Pradip Taa were beaten to death in Burdwan on Wednesday morning. CPIM workers under the leadership of Taa, were holding a rally at Dewandighi near Burdwan town to mobilise public support in favour of the February 28 Bharat Bandh which has been called by the Left trade unions. The rally was attacked by some armed persons, stated to be Trinamool Congress supporters. Taa and another CPIM leader and Burdwan district committee member Kamal Gayen were beaten to death by the attackers. Taa won the Burdwan (North) assembly seat in 2006 assembly elections in West Bengal. Burdwan was a red bastion before 2011 when the CPIM lost most of the seats in the district in last year's assembly polls. A 12-hour bandh has been called in Burdwan on Wednesday in protest against the killings. The police has rounded up three persons in connection with the killings. The ruling Trinamool Congress has announced that they will actively oppose the February 28 Bharat Bandh in West Bengal. Senior Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal industry minister Partha Chatterjee had announced on last Tuesday that Trinamool activists will be holding rallies across the state in protest against the bandh. West Bengal chief secretary Samar Ghosh had issued a circular asking the state government employees not to take leave on the bandh day. The opposition leader and CPIM MLA, Surjya Kanta Mishra said on Wednesday that "Wednesday's killings of their party leaders is a result of provocative speech given by the industry minister on last Tuesday. Trinamool Congress is trying to thwart the bandh by applying muscle power." Interestingly, West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) president Pradip Bhattacharjee also condemned the killings and urged the ruling Trinamool Congress to stop the politics of violence. BJP state president Rahul Sinha will meet the West Bengal governor M.K.Narayanan on Thursday to urge him to ask the government to maintain law and order in the state. Wednesday's incident is the first major case after last year's assembly elections when a former CPIM MLA was killed in a crowded place. Senior CPIM leaders have rushed to Burdwan to take stock of the situation.
