Mr. Kumar said it had been made clear by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati that farmers&#039; land would not be acquired without their consent and the stress would be on finding an amicable solution.&lt;br /&gt;

The project dates back to 2009 and about 129 hectares of land in the three villages of Katesar, Kodopur and Domari was to be acquired. Subsequently, the Housing and Urban Development Corporation agreed to give loans for the ambitious project. Subsequently, the Housing and Urban Development Corporation agreed to give loans for the ambitious project. The farmers, who have been protesting the acquisition of fertile agricultural land for a cultural and institutional hub on the banks of the Ganga, continued with their dharna on Monday.<br /><br />They have threatened self-immolation if the land acquisition process launched by the Varanasi Development Authority was not called off. The dharna has been on for about a week.<br /><br />Reports from Chandauli said the Katesar farmers have prepared five funeral pyres for committing mass suicides and self-immolation if their demands were not met.<br /><br />Home Secretary Deepak Kumar said here on Monday that the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police of Chandauli were camping in Katesar village and engaging in talks with the farmers, agitating under the banner of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti.<br /><br />Mr. Kumar said it had been made clear by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati that farmers' land would not be acquired without their consent and the stress would be on finding an amicable solution.<br /><br />The project dates back to 2009 and about 129 hectares of land in the three villages of Katesar, Kodopur and Domari was to be acquired. Later, the size of the land to be acquired was scaled down to 121 hectares after excluding the families of some Dalit farmers and populated areas. The first notification for acquiring land under section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act was issued in June 2010. Subsequently, the Housing and Urban Development Corporation agreed to give loans for the ambitious project. As per the proposal, land would be acquired in Katesar and Kodopur villages in the first phase and in Domari village (Varanasi district) in the second.<br /><br />Political parties have backed the ongoing agitation. While the Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party have pledged support to the farmers, a Congress delegation has been sent to Katesar village for taking stock of the situation.<br /><br />Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Rita Bahuguna Joshi told reporters here that the Congress would not &ldquo;allow Katesar to become another Bhatta-Parsaul.&rdquo;<br /><br />Dr. Joshi said that in the &ldquo;public hearing&rdquo; to be held by the UPCC in the districts on June 9, the &ldquo;anti-people&rdquo; measures of the BSP regime would be brought to focus.<br /><br /></div>'
