UN may replicate SP’s dispute-free village scheme in developing nations

The United Nations is considering a proposal to implement the Mahatma Gandhi Tanta Mukti Gaon Mohim (Dispute-free Village Scheme) of the state government in other developing nations of the world, State Home Minister R R Patil said on Monday. Pune Rural SP Pratap Dighavkar had presented the model of the scheme before the UN in New York on August 11.

“The recent presentation made by our police officers at the UN was appreciated by officials. The UN officials are considering a proposal to implement the dispute-free scheme in developing countries,” said Patil. The initiative is in its fourth successful year and villages earn points for implementation of the scheme with winners being awarded prize money between Rs 1 lakh and 10 lakh.

According to the state home department, 7,806 villages have been declared dispute free and 4,914 villages have been declared dispute free by a district level committee. State level assessment is currently under way for 2009. As of April 30 this year, 7.28 lakh criminal suits were resolved amicably, with 1.87 civil suits, 34,060 revenue suits and 49,671 suits also being resolved amicably.
