UP 1st phase poll candidates: 38% criminals, 51% millionaires by Shailvee Sharda

Out of the candidates contesting in the first phase of state assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, at least 38 percent have criminal cases registered against them, 51 percent are millionaires and only seven percent are women.

Almost all major political parties have fielded candidates who have criminal cases registered against them. Samajwadi Party has 28 out of 55 (51 %), Bahujan Samaj Party 24 out of 55 (44 %), Bhartiya Janta Party 24 out of 55 (44 %), Indian National Congress 15 out of 54 (28 %), Peace Party 12 out of 42 (29 %), Janta Dal(U) 5 out of 20 (25 %), Rashtriya Lok Dal 1 out of 1 (100 %) candidates with declared criminal cases.

Out of these 109 candidates with declared criminal cases, 46 (16 %) have been charged with serious criminal cases like murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, robbery, extortion etc. BJP has 12, BSP 11 , SP 11 , Peace Party 6 , INC 5 , JD(U) 1 such candidates.

A total of 144 (51%) candidates out of 284 analyzed for the 1st Phase are millionaires. However, six candidates have declared assets less than Rs. 100,000 (1 lakh). A total of 10 candidates out of 284 declared liabilities of Rs. 80 Lakhs and above.

Among major parties, the average asset per candidate for SP is Rs. 1.74 crores , BSP Rs. 3.83 crores, BJP Rs. 1.56 crores , INC Rs. 1.34 crores , Peace Party Rs. 1.01 crores and JD(U) Rs. 32.09 Lakhs.

163 (57%) out of 284 candidates are graduates or with higher educational qualifications. Out of 867 candidates analyzed for the first phase Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2012, only 65(7%) candidates are women; the number of women candidates for BSP is 5(9%) out of 55, for BJP 6(11%) out of 55, INC 4(7%) out of 54 and SP 4(7%) out of 55.
