Led by the KSS, the farmers have been protesting at Katesar village for the past four days against acquisition of their land by the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) for developing a city centre.&lt;br /&gt;

Yadav said the VDA initiated the process of acquisition of 121 hectares of land for development of a cultural/city hub. ``This would affect over 1,000 farmers,&#039;&#039; he said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
``We started our protest on April 25 but withdrew it on May 7 after an assurance by the officials that our land would not be acquired,&#039;&#039; Yadav said alleging that the officials did not keep their promise and again started the land acquisition process.&lt;br /&gt;

``Today we made CO L D Bharti and SDM Ramashraya hostage for over three hours to press our demand,&#039;&#039; Yadav said.&lt;br /&gt;

VDA vice-chairman R P Goswami said as per plans, the 2008 project was to be executed in two phases on 300 hectare. ``In the initial phase, 121 hectare would be acquired in Katesar and Kodopur villages. More land would be acquired later,&#039;&#039; he said.&lt;br /&gt;

The VDA has already deposited Rs 11 crore with the land acquisition department to begin the process for the first phase. ``A fund of Rs 54 crore is required for land acquisition. In the first phase, Rs 115 crore would be needed for acquisition and development of land to be allotted to various institutions. On Saturday, an SDM and a police officer, who had gone to the village to sort out the issue, were confined for hours by villagers in Chandauli. They managed to reach the district headquarters in the evening.<br /><br />Though Chandauli district magistrate Vijay Kumar Tripathi denied the officers were held hostage, president of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti (KSS) Ram Lakhan Yadav claimed the two ``managed to escape our clutches in the evening.''<br /><br />Led by the KSS, the farmers have been protesting at Katesar village for the past four days against acquisition of their land by the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) for developing a city centre.<br /><br />Yadav said the VDA initiated the process of acquisition of 121 hectares of land for development of a cultural/city hub. ``This would affect over 1,000 farmers,'' he said.<br /><br />``We started our protest on April 25 but withdrew it on May 7 after an assurance by the officials that our land would not be acquired,'' Yadav said alleging that the officials did not keep their promise and again started the land acquisition process.<br /><br />``Today we made CO L D Bharti and SDM Ramashraya hostage for over three hours to press our demand,'' Yadav said.<br /><br />VDA vice-chairman R P Goswami said as per plans, the 2008 project was to be executed in two phases on 300 hectare. ``In the initial phase, 121 hectare would be acquired in Katesar and Kodopur villages. More land would be acquired later,'' he said.<br /><br />The VDA has already deposited Rs 11 crore with the land acquisition department to begin the process for the first phase. ``A fund of Rs 54 crore is required for land acquisition. In the first phase, Rs 115 crore would be needed for acquisition and development of land to be allotted to various institutions. The Housing and Urban Development Corporation has assured the VDA of loans for creating this institutional hub in the trans-Ganga area,'' the V-C said. <br /></div>               </font>
