While well-off farmers are purchasing it at a premium from open market, the small and marginal ones are sitting with their fingers crossed waiting for the Agriculture Department to come to their aid.</p><p align="justify">Urea has the highest nitrogen content of all solid nitrogenous fertilizers. It has nitrogen content of about 46 per cent and can adapt to almost all types of land. The main function of the fertilizer is to provide plants with nitrogen for promotion of green leafy growth.</p><p align="justify">Sambalpur district has received about 16,000 tonnes of Urea fertilizer against the requirement of 22,292 tonnes, so far. Though Deputy Director of Agriculture, Sambalpur, Ashok Kumar Mohanty admitted to the fertilizer shortage, he said the supply to the district was better as compared to other districts.</p><p align="justify">&quot;More Urea fertilizer has been sought and the shortage would ease once the consignment reaches the district,&quot; he added.</p><p align="justify">The situation is worse in Sonepur district where farmers have hit the streets demanding their quota of Urea. They attributed lack of co-ordination between Agriculture and Co-operation Departments, and lack of storage space for the scarcity in the district. Though the district's requirement is 9,490 tonnes, till September 8, it has received 3,624 tonnes which is less than half the quantity required.</p><p align="justify">Moreover, there are allegations of unscrupulous traders engaged in hoarding. Surprisingly, due to lack of storage space, the quota for the district is stocked in Bargarh and Balangir district.</p><p align="justify">Deputy Director of Agriculture, Sonepur, Satyanarayan Mishra attributed the shortage to lack of co-operation from Co-operation Department and hoped that the situation will improve in the next couple of days. He said though Primary Agricultural Co-operative Societies (PACS) have been entrusted to distribute Urea fertilizer to farmers, those refused to store it.</p><p align="justify">In Jharsuguda, while the requirement in five blocks is 9,000 tonnes, the entire district has received 5,200 tonnes. Sources said a consignment of 2,500 tonnes of the fertilizer will reach the district shortly, which will meet the shortage.</p><p align="justify">Deputy Director of Agriculture, Bargarh, Gurucharan Tripathy informed that against the requirement of 29,000 tonnes, the district has received 17,500 tonnes of the fertlizer. He said the district will get a consignment of 5,000 tonnes soon.</p><p align="justify">Farmer leader and Convener of Paschim Odisha Krushak Sangathan Samanwaya Samiti (POKSSS), Ashok Pradhan lashed out at the Centre for reacting late to the problem.</p><p align="justify">&quot;It is the duty of the Government to ensure that farmers get their requirement of fertilizer on time and do not have to pay through their nose to buy it from open market.</p>               </font>
