Vikasa drive to identify tribal child labourers

Vikasa organisation, a wing under the National Child Labour Project (NCLP), has taken up a special drive to identify child labourers, in tribal and fishermen areas, and in areas where SCs and weaker section population lives in East Godavari.

The identified children in age group of 7 to 14 years (both boys and girls) would be admitted to bridge schools run by NCLP, to equip them to join normal schools. The organisation also provides training in specified trades, under the Rajiv Udyogasri, after they attain 18 years of age.

Under the programme, the authorities of NCLP started identification of these sections in the tribal areas. They found more than 40 children in the age group of 8 to 12 years, at Lakkavanipeta hamlet, about 4 km into forest area from Bada-danapalli in Rajavommagi mandal of East Godavari district. Similarly, they found children, in the age group of 7 to 14 years at Pallam fishermen village, in Katrenikona mandal.

At Gontuvaripalem in Yaleswaram mandal, children from SC sections and tribals, were found engaged in domestic work. The authorities will provide afternoon lunch, books, and stationary, in addition to school uniforms to these children.

In addition to this, an amount of `100 will be deposited in the name of the child, and the withdrawal of the same will be permitted after the child completes schooling, and goes for higher studies. The East Godavari Vikasa and NCLP project director (PD), Mr V. Narasimha Rao, said that the special drive would be continued in all the areas in the district.

“The details of the identified children were submitted to the district collector, Mr M. Ravi Chandra, and we would start the schools for these sections as per the directions of the district administration at the earliest,” the PD added.
