Villagers thrash BDO on coin hunt-Rajesh Kumar Pandey

-The Telegraph

BDO Sisir Kumar Singh and Co. could never have imagined this treasure hunt to go bad.

But it did.

They were assaulted yesterday on their way back from Kamarchak village where they had traced about 100 antique silver coins that were recovered from a school construction site in neighbouring Bodaiya village, about 40km from the Dumka district headquarters.

In the end they managed to salvage 23 coins, the rest were looted, allegedly by the very villagers who had initially returned them to Singh when he went there along with circle inspector Srikant Mandal, officer in charge of Ramgarh police station Ashok Kumar and constables Devnarain Ram and Yogendra Prasad Pandey.

The coins, stashed in a pot, were found by eight labourers of Kamarchak while they were working to build an another classroom at the upgraded primary school in Bodaiya.

But instead of handing them over to the authorities, the labourers distributed them among themselves. Word got around and soon, the team of officials was on its way to the village in Ramgarh block.

Once they reached Kamarchak village, six labourers returned 23 coins they had with them. But two other labourers were missing. The officials searched their homes and ultimately recovered all 100 coins and were on their way back when they were attacked.

Dumka deputy commissioner Prashant Kumar said they lost most of the silver coins, managing to save only 23.

“Today, we have been conducting raids to nab the culprits who have fled the village,” he said, adding that an FIR had been lodged naming all the eight labourers as well as others.

Kumar, who has stopped work at the Bodaiya school site, said that the 23 coins recovered had been kept in the treasury and the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) kept in the loop.

He said he was expecting an ASI team to visit the school site soon to ascertain the possible origins of the antique coins.
