Bangalore Urban with a population of 95.88 lakh (95,88,910) is the most populous district in the State with a decadal growth of 46.68 per cent as against the State average of 15.67 per cent, according to the provisional Census 2011 data released here on Wednesday.
Bangalore Urban district accounts for 15.69 per cent of the State's population. In 2001, the population of Bangalore Urban district was 65,37,124, which was 12.37 per cent of the State's total population. The State's population is estimated at 6,11,30,704 in 2011 as against 5,28,50,562 in 2001, an increase of 82,80,142 in 10 years. The State is ranked ninth in the country in terms of population, accounting for 5.05 per cent of the country's total population. Except Kodagu and Bangalore Rural, all other districts in the State have a population of more than one million. Among the districts with highest population, Belgaum occupies second place with 7.82 per cent (47,78,439 persons) of the State's total population, followed by Mysore with 4.20 per cent (29,94, 744), Tumkur with 4.39 per cent, (26,81,449), Gulbarga with 4.20 per cent (25,64,892) and Bellary with 4.14 per cent (25,32,383). Even as the State's population growth has reduced from 17.51 per cent in 2001 to 15.67 per cent in 2011, Bijapur, Koppal, Bellary, Bangalore Urban, Gulbarga, Yadgir and Bangalore Rural districts have registered a growth rate above the State average while Chikmagalur has seen a negative growth of minus 0.28 per cent. Releasing the provisional data, T.K. Anil Kumar, Director, Census Operations, Karnataka, said the density of population per sq. km increased from 276 to 319 during the decade, an increase of 43. Density of population is highest in Bangalore Urban district (4,378). Sex ratio The overall sex ratio (number of females per 1,000 males) has increased from 965 in 2001 to 968 in 2011. Bangalore Urban has the lowest sex ration of 908 followed by Bangalore Rural with 945 and Haveri with 951. There has been a perceptible increase in the sex ratio in Kodagu (1,019), Chikmagalur (1,005), Chamarajanagar (989), Dharwad (967), Shimoga (995) and Mysore (982). Though Udupi continues to be on top in 2011, the ratio has declined from 1,130 in 2001 to 1,093 in 2011. Kodagu is ranked second while Dakshina Kannada stands third (1,018). Child sex ratio The child sex ratio in the age group of 0 to 6 has declined from 946 in 2001 to 943 in 2011. The child population is 6.9 million and its proportion to the total population has declined to 11.21 per cent from 13.59 per cent in 2001. The top three districts in child sex ratio are Kodagu (977), Hassan (964) and Chikmagalur (963), and the bottom three are Bagalkot (929), Bijapur (930) and Davangere (931). Mr. Anil Kumar said that there would be a slight variation in the provisional data and the final data, which would be published next year. |
