Home minister Narottam Mishra has openly opposed the Shivraj Chouhan government’s decision to introduce chicken and egg in the diet of inmates at juvenile correction homes

Bhopal: Opposition is building within the ruling BJP in Madhya Pradesh after the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government decided to introduce chicken and egg into the diet of inmates at juvenile correction homes in the state. In the past, the dietary choice of eggs in government-provided meals at aanganwadis and schools has been a controversial subject, with the BJP government opposing it as ‘nonvegetarian’ food.

On August 25, the state’s woman and child development department notified new rules regarding diet, uniforms, etc. at the juvenile correctional facilities. The revised diet chart stated that the inmates could be served chicken once a week or egg four days a week. Those who do not want egg or chicken would be given paneer instead.

The woman and child development department, under which the juvenile correction homes fall, does not have a separate minister. It has been under the charge of chief minister Chouhan for some time.

On September 4, home minister Narottam Mishra told the media that eggs would not be allowed in any government-sponsored meal in MP. He claimed there was confusion on the matter and that no notification had been issued by the state government.

The notified rules, though, are available on the website of the government printing and stationery department of MP. Interestingly, the rules notified by the state government are identical to the ones existing at the Union government level and in several other BJP-ruled states.
